Wood Pellet Manufacturing Process
There are roughly around seven steps involved in the wood pellet manufacturing process. The material which needs to be turned into pellets must be taken through a process which involves high pressure and temperatures. Biomass has to be brought together in one location and put under a set of conditions. It is only when the conditions are appropriate, that the pellets would be formed and ready for use. Extrusion is one of the most common practices involved in this process. Pellets formed from wood, are of the best quality while those from other materials need the help of binders to hold them together.
The process kicks off with the generation of raw materials. Dry sawdust makes up one of the most common materials used to manufacture pellet. Materials or byproducts from hardwood flooring mills are responsible for the production of high quality pellets. The process is generally divided into grinding, control of moisture content in the material, extrusion, cooling the material before finally being packaged appropriately. Pellets mills of the standard-sizes require the particles being used to make pellets to be no more than 3mm in size. Run the material through a chipper and hammer mill to reduce its size.
You need to remember that manufacturing pellets requires a lot of energy. It is an energy consuming process hence you should prepare accordingly. Drying the materials requires a lot of energy just as much as the process of running the various parts of the machine which are being used to manufacture pellets. Plants that specialize in producing large quantities of pellets use their own feedstock to produce the energy required for this process. Smaller plants can make use of other means or sources of energy to make pellets.
